LADY PINK "TC5 Teamwork' at Beyond The Streets NYC.⠀ @ladypinknyc’s surrealist paintings offer rich acrylic interpretations of both her natural and urban surroundings. The Ecuadorian-born artist started painting New York City subway trains in 1979 at the age of 15. In 1982 she had a starring role in the motion picture Wild Style and by the age of 21 enjoyed her first solo show at the Moore College of Art, casting her as something of a cult figure in the subculture. Since then LADY PINK has established herself in the fine arts world with her female-focused murals, illustrations and paintings, while she continues to share her experience with young people through mural workshops and university lectures.⠀ We are open Thursdays-Sundays 11am - 8pm. Box office closes at 7pm, exhibition closes at 8pm. #beyondthestreets⠀ #nyc⠀⠀ #ladypink⠀ #graffiti #tc5

United Graffiti Artists (UGA) included SNAKE 1, SJK 171, MIKE 171, STITCH 1, HENRY 161, WICKED GARY, BAMA, COCO 144, PHASE 2, CHARMIN 65 and many others. ⠀ ⠀ In the spring of 1973, UGA participated with the Joffrey Ballet in the performance entitled Deuce Coupe. They painted a rolling backdrop on stage as dancers leaped about through what Herb Migdoll recalls as “a mist of lethal enamel spray paint.” The backdrop was created anew every night and showcased the artists in the realm of "high" culture. ⠀ ⠀ Check out the United Graffiti Artists as well as other East Coast writers who led the graffiti movement in the historical section on the 5th floor. ⠀ We are open Thursdays- Sundays 11am-8pm. CHAZ BOJÓRQUEZ’s print of Mr. Lucky just launched on the site.⠀ The serigraph is a smaller version of the 7ft tall Mr. Lucky painting that is currently on view at #beyondthestreets #nyc. The iconic skull tag Señor Suerte was created in 1969 from composites of imagery represented during the times and social struggles of the civil rights movement. While going to Black Panther parties and under the influence of films like Shaft and Super Fly, Chaz began drawing Señor Suerte, giving him a pimp hat and fur-collared coat, a smiling skull face used in Day of the Dead festivals and representative of his heritage, and skull fingers twisted into a “Good Luck” symbol of faith. The adoption of the iconic skull by the local neighborhood of the Avenues became a gangster image of protection from death.⠀ Print Details: ⠀ Chaz Bojórquez ・Mr. Lucky ・ 32” x 36” ・ Deckle edge ・ 10 color screen print on Coventry Rag 320 gsm ・ Edition of 100 ・Signed and numbered by Chaz Bojórquez ・ Beyond The Streets embossed⠀ "I want to make sure when you look at my art, you know what kind of person is making it” - @chaz_bojorquez ⠀ 👉Click the link in bio to shop👈 🎥: @chopemdownfilms⠀ #beyondthestreets #nyc #losangeles #chazbojorquez #graffitilegend #westcoastgraffiti #highlandpark #LA #MrLucky #chopemdownfilms #merchmonday

Vintage spray paint signage and ephemera from Roger Gastman's private collection.⠀ ⠀ "A lot of people collect vintage signage. Gas stations, Coca-Cola etc. I collect vintage spray paint signage and ephemera. These things are not easy to find as I don’t think that many old hardware stores thought about keeping them. I get a kick out of the “odd” jobs that everyone was “buying” spray paint for. And you know what… I bet it was really used to paint little Johnny’s bike and wagon…" -@rogergastman⠀ ⠀ #beyondthestreets#nyc #rogergastman⠀ #krylon⠀ #spraycans⠀ #vintage#rustoleum

Alicia McCarthy's mural for Beyond The Streets NYC located in 'The After School' section on the fifth floor.⠀ ⠀ @helloforevor'’s mixed-media abstractions spring from the well of her graffiti-writing days in San Francisco’s streets, which spilled over onto school lockers while she worked on her BFA at San Francisco Art Institute in 1994, earning her a scolding letter from the dean. She holds an MFA from the University of California at Berkeley, and her solo exhibitions include Jack Hanley Gallery, New York, and the Berkeley Art Museum. McCarthy has received various accolades, including a 2017 SECA Art Award and exhibition at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, as well as residencies with Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine and Headlands Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Public collections with works by the artist include Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art, Brussels; American Academy of Arts & Letters, New York; Facebook Headquarters, Menlo Park, California; and Oakland Museum of California. Twenty-five years after being reprimanded for vandalizing SFAI, McCarthy was commissioned to paint a large-scale piece in the school’s graduate center.⠀ ⠀ #beyondthestreets#nyc#aliciamccarthy#missionschool #abstractart #aliciamccarthy #afterschool

Shepard Fairey MAKE ART NOT WAR (2005) 2019 Screenprint and mixed media collage on paper, 30 x 41 in. This print, created during the Iraq war, is an alternative phrase inspired by popular 1960s anti-war mantra “make love, not war.” In this case, Fairey asserts the need for creative rather than destructive acts. The Art Nouveau style of the image is an additional reference to the influence of Art Nouveau on hippie and psychedelic art of the ‘60s, including many anti-Vietnam war posters. Encased within a floral garland, the female figure appears more self-assured and real rather than ethereal. The placement of two paint brushes below her portrait not only refer to a classical tool of art production but resemble spears, which when read alongside the directive to “OBEY” that appears on her neck, simultaneously makes the otherwise palatable message more pointed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Facing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent" is a reflection on the last 30 years of @obeygiant ‘s career and is currently on view at #beyondthestreets #nyc We are open Thursdays through Sundays 11am to 8pm. #FACINGTHEGIANT #OBEYGIANT30TH #obey #obeygiant #shepardfairey

We are open today Brooklyn!⠀ 11AM - 8PM, last call for walkup tickets is 7PM. ⠀ Check out FAILE's installation on the 5th floor in the New Pop section.⠀ ⠀ @faileart is the Brooklyn-based artistic collaboration between Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller. The name is an anagram of their first project, “A life.” Since its inception in 1999, FAILE has been known for a wide-ranging multimedia practice recognizable for its explorations of duality through a fragmented style of appropriation and collage. While painting and printmaking remain central to their approach, over the past decade FAILE has adapted its signature mass-culture-driven iconography to a vast array of materials and techniques, from wooden boxes and window pallets to more traditional canvas, prints, sculptures, stencils, installations, and prayer wheels. FAILE’s work is constructed from found visual imagery, often blurring the line between “high” and “low” culture. Exhibitions sometimes emphasize audience participation, a critique of consumerism, and the incorporation of religious media, architecture, and archival research into their work.⠀ #beyondthestreets⠀ #nyc⠀ #faile

CLEON PETERSON’s “Blood & Soil” sculpture for scale. ⚖️🐎 On view now in the Figurative section at Beyond The Streets NYC. @cleonpeterson Peterson’s works depict militaristic figures and savagery. From paintings of powerful men deployed in hard-edged graphics with a confined palette, to the sculpted warhorse often associated with brutal uniformed aggressors, each evokes historically fascistic imagery. Peterson’s latest series embodies the artist’s longtime preoccupation with violence, rendered in simple, stylized figures in black, white and red, with permanent war as an overarching theme. As Peterson continually expresses violence as an element of his own shadow side, he also sheds light on the ever-present violent impulses in our society at a time when this subject is increasingly uncomfortable and ever more urgent. Peterson was born in Seattle in 1973 and now lives in Los Angeles. 📷 @marthacoopergram We are open Thursdays-Sundays 11am - 8pm. Tickets at the door is 7pm. Exhibition tip: take the stairs up to the sixth floor to find @clawmoney and MISS 17. ⠀ ⠀ Claudia (CLAW) Gold is a graffiti writer turned fashion designer. Her signature paw with three claws covered New York City in the late 1980s, then periodically through the decades, which led to her launching her own clothing line, Claw & Co. ⠀ MISS 17 is a native New Yorker who has painted graffiti here and abroad. Her throw-ups are representative of the work she has done in the streets as an aggressive street bomber since 1998.⠀ Their latest co-creation mixes MISS 17’s throw-ups with the signature clawed paw bearing streetwise witticisms for which CLAW is known.⠀ @future_classix @clawmoney #beyondthestreets#nyc#clawmoney#miss17 #caludiagold#graffiti 📛1️⃣7️⃣
