In a study by Handlin Et. Al, just 5 minutes of interaction between dogs and their owners significantly increased oxytocin levels in both the human and the dog. Oxytocin, also known as the "love hormone", plays an important role in promoting bonding, trust, and social behaviors.
In the same study, 15 minutes of contact lowered levels of human cortisol. This hormone, also known as the "stress hormone", elevates blood glucose, suppresses the immune system, and increases visceral fat - responses that are necessary for life but problematic if elevated for long periods of time.
A combination of these hormonal effects and positive lifestyle changes associated with dog ownership decreases obesity and blood pressure. Interestingly, dog owners are significantly less likely to die within a year of suffering a heart attack. Dog interaction is also linked to lower heart rate at baseline and during times of stress. Psychologically, dogs have been shown to reduce anxiety and improve social behaviors in schoolkids.

Today I took a much needed yoga class where the instructor talked about the importance of stress and it’s relation to breathing. When we’re stressed, just like when we’re in a difficult yoga pose, we don’t have as strong of control over our breathing. But if you focus on the control of your breathing, you’ll train your body how to handle stress. It therefore will become second nature and you’ll be able to focus on the pose that is foreign to your body. This can be applied to everyday activities such as a new job, talking to new people, or doing something you’re uncomfortable with. The next time you’re stressed, take a step back and center yourself on your breath. Breathe not just to survive, breathe to grow. ❤️ I drank my protein smoothie so fast that I forgot to take a picture so here’s an alcoholic beverage from Hawaii.
HOMEMADE CHICKEN CEASAR SALAD on the menu tonight! Anyone else love a good Caesar salad?? This recipe is definitely on repeat in our household and love throwing it together when we have company 🙌
The dressing and croutons are homemade so are much healthier than the packaged stuff and they only take about 20 min tops to make. Recipe below 👇
1/4 cup @primalkitchenfoods avocado mayo
1/4 grated Parmesan reggiano
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp Worcestershire
Himalayan pink salt + black pepper
Add all ingredients to bowl and mix with whisk. Add in chopped romaine and toss to coat.
Chopped 3 slices sourdough bread into cubes. Toss in olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder + onion powder. Baked for about 8 min at 400, tossing occasionally.
Add to salad along with some chicken (or shrimp) and freshly grated Parmesan. Enjoy ✌️#nicoleontherun
